Question About What Stance I Should Train In, Orthodox Or Southpaw?
I just joined Muay Thai and I'm confused on what stance I should train in. Im left handed, I do everything with my left hand including my power punches but my right foot is more dominant. I know since I need to keep my strong hand in the back I should stand southpaw but for some reason orthodox feels better since my right foot is dominant. I know since it feels more comfortable I should stick to it but I dont want to end up a one handed fighter, so should I just train southpaw and try to get used to it? Sorry if I sound amateur
try both out and see, I am left handed also.
If you try a high kick, is it easier with your right leg?? sounds strange
with your back to your opponent, its the future
Whatever feels most comfortable. Although it's not that common there are lead hand dominant fighters. Left hook, right kick all day ;)
Try orthopaw or southdox as in hybrid it :)
Sai sai all day.
Whichever you prefer
if you have just started try working with both, a lot harder to try and switch once you are already used to one stance and been doing it a long time, if you can use both stances well then got an advantage when you fight
practice both...looks good in a fight when someone can switch stances and unpredictability is always good
doesnt it depends of your fighting style also? If you are more a boxer then a kicker or the other way around?
By no means am I a pro or expert I haven't even had a fight so I am nobody to talk like I know anything, what I can say is I too am a southpaw and I use my left for everything, punch, kick, knee etc, last time in Phuket I fell over a bike whilst walking cut my elbow and had a nasty gash on my leg so they had me kicking and elbowing and kneeing using my right, now my right knee and elbow is as good as my left so try out both sides.
I am pretty tall so I try to use my jab and keep distance in sparring but sometimes I switch up to an orthodox stance and jab using my left just to freshen things up in rounds.
plenty of people end up with nasty gash in Phuket
Love poking a nasty gash, it's like wet paint, can't resist
it will pay off later when fighting as its hard to deal with.
If you stand goofy stance on a Skateboard, Snowboard, and Surfboard, then fight Southpaw.
that's a good point Sam. I ride goofy skateboarding and snowboarding and am lefty with anythign with a stick like hockey or baseball etc.
I should give southpaw more of a go.
